‘Wasted on You’ features classic Evanescence, realest music video

Evanescence is back with a new rock single and a powerful, real music video to accompany it.

Wasted on You is the debut single from Evanescence’s fifth album, The Bitter Truth. The Bitter Truth comes three years after Evanescence reworked some of its songs into orchestra pieces on the Synthesis album, which did feature two new songs. It is the first rock album for the band since 2011, so it has certainly been a long time coming.

Wasted on You debuted at midnight last night. It’s a song that features elements of old and new and is definitely an Evanescence song. You’ve got Amy Lee’s soaring vocals dominating the song, with powerful guitars and drums backing her singing. The lyrics are somewhat angsty, as are most Evanescence songs, with the chorus going as follows:

I don’t need drugs,

I’m already six feet low

Wasted on you

Waiting for a miracle

I can’t move on

Feels like we’re frozen in time

I’m wasted on you

Just pass me the bitter truth

Aside from being catchy lyrics, the chorus also features the name of the new album in them, which is an interesting change. It suggests there could be a theme of “the bitter truth” present on the album.

The song also features heavier elements of electronica than previously featured in Evanescence music. There have been uses of electronica in the past, such as in Swimming Home on the self-titled album and a little more electronica present on Synthesis, but on this song, electronica is heavily present and it works well blending with the rest of the elements present in the song.

The most powerful part of the song has to be the accompanying music video, which debuted at 11 a.m. CT Friday. It contains homemade footage of Amy Lee, Troy McLawhorn, Jen Majura, Tim McCord and Will Hunt as they live through the quarantine the country is under due to the virus outbreak. We see each member of the band in their homes, each of them coping with the quarantine in their own ways.

Aside from being a great visual piece to go with Wasted on You, the video is incredibly real and relatable, as so many Americans are currently living with the day-to-day of being quarantined at home. Seeing people many of us know — the band members of Evanescence in this case — going through the same things as us makes the video that much more powerful and memorable.

So far, there is no release date available for the rest of The Bitter Truth. It’s been suggested on social media that Evanescence will release the songs one at a time, which makes sense since we’re all under quarantine until further notice. But if Wasted on You was any indication, it is clear that Evanescence is just as strong as ever and their new music will be fantastic.
