The Skywalker Saga may be over, but that doesn’t mean the story of Star Wars is finished.
Ever since the Walt Disney Studio purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, rumors have flown around about what kind of media Disney would produce that was Star Wars related.
Already, Disney has produced several projects. The sequel trilogy, the final season of The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars Resistance and The Mandalorian were all produced during the Disney era. That’s not to mention the dozens of books, comics and video games that have also been published since Disney’s acquisition in 2012.
Several films and TV series have been announced and/or rumored over the years. Here are some of the current projects in development by Lucasfilm:
Films
- A trilogy written by The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson. These were announced in 2017, ahead of the release of The Last Jedi. Although little has been shared about the story, it is said the trilogy will be separate from the Skywalker Saga. At this time, it’s unclear when the films would be released.
- A film developed by J.D. Dillard and Matt Owens. Variety reported on the film in February, saying the film is in its early stages and hardly any details are available. Additionally, no comment from Disney or Lucasfilm was available. So take this with a grain of salt.
- A film directed by Taika Waititi and co-written with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Lucasfilm announced this film on starwars.com on Star Wars Day this year. Little information was released, by the article does state it will be a film for theatrical release.
TV Series
- An untitled Cassian Andor series. This series was announced before Disney+ launched. It will center on the rebel we first met in Rogue One. No release date has been announced, but a casting announcement in April revealed Genevieve O’Reilly will reprise her role as Mon Mothma both from Rogue One and Revenge of the Sith (most of her scenes in the prequel film were deleted). In addition, Stellan Skarsgard, Denise Gough and Kyle Soller will join the cast in unspecified roles. The series will take place five years before Rogue One.
- An untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Ewan McGregor will reprise his role from the prequel trilogies as Obi-Wan Kenobi. The series will focus on Obi-Wan during his exile on Tatooine in between the prequel and original trilogies. McGregor spoke to Gamespot earlier this year and says production is set to begin in January 2021.
- The Bad Batch: A unit of Clone Troopers introduced in the final season of The Clone Wars will get their own Disney+ series. The Bad Batch, also known as Clone Force 99 consists of four Clones designed with genetic mutations. The series will follow the Bad Batch as they navigate their way through the galaxy following the end of the Clone Wars and the rise of the Empire. As these Clones did not serve actively against the Jedi, it’s unclear how, if at all, they were affected by Order 66 or if they didn’t have the implant for the order placed into them.
- The Mandalorian, season two: The Mandalorian was renewed for a second season even before it premiered. It’s a good thing, too, because there probably would have been a revolt if viewers didn’t get more of Mando and The Child (aka Baby Yoda). Season two will feature Temuera Morrison returning to the series, likely playing an older Boba Fett. There are also rumors that Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, will appear in season two as well. If so, she will likely be searching for Ezra Bridger from Star Wars Rebels, who disappeared in the final episode.
Books
- The High Republic: Previously known as Project Luminous, Star Wars: The High Republic is a massive publishing campaign that takes place approximately 200 years before the Skywalker Saga begins in The Phantom Menace. The series will consist of adult novels, books for children, young adult books and comics following a set of characters who serve the Jedi and the Republic in the prime of both institutions. Lucasfilm announced the publication of the first works in The High Republic were pushed back to 2021. Charles Soule’s adult novel Star Wars: The High Republic: Light of the Jedi and Justina Ireland’s middle grade novel Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage will be released on January 5, 2021. In addition, Claudia Gray’s young adult novel Star Wars: The High Republic: Into the Dark will release on February 2, 2021.
