(Some) news announced at Star Wars Celebration 2025

The golden age of Star Wars is continuing in the coming years, with new movies and series coming soon.

Star Wars Celebration 2025 took place in Japan in mid-April. It featured guest panels of actors and crew members talking about memories of older projects, along with announcements of new projects in development.

Here is a look at some of the major announcements from Star Wars Celebration.

New Films

The next two films in the Star Wars saga are both in active development and have firm release dates.

First is The Mandalorian & Grogu, a feature film that follows the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian. Few details are available, but we do know the film will feature the return of Din Djarin and his apprentice Grogu (aka The Child aka Baby Yoda).

Joining the cast is the legendary Sigourney Weaver. Weaver plays a veteran pilot for the Rebel Alliance. Little information about her character is known, though it is implied she hires Mando for a job.

Jon Favreau directs this film, with Dave Filoni executive producing. It will release on May 22, 2026.

Also announced is the film: Star Wars: Starfigher. Helmed by Shawn Levy (who has directed several episodes of Stranger Things), this film takes place a few years after The Rise of Skywalker.

Plot details are virtually non-existent for this film. It will star Ryan Gosling in a yet unnamed main character role. The film is slated for production this fall and will release on May 28, 2027.

New Series and New Seasons

The Sith Lord formerly known as Darth Maul will star in a new animated series. Maul – Shadow Lord takes place about a year after the end of the Clone Wars.

Sam Witwer reprises his role as Maul, who will seek to rise to lead the underworld factions early in the Imperial era. The series is currently in production and will release on Disney+ sometime in 2026.

Meanwhile, Volume 3 of Star Wars Visions will debut this fall. As before, it will consist of animated anthology stories from various Japanese animation studios. Visions Volume 3 will release October 29, 2025.

In addition, a spin-off series is in development. The Ninth Jedi debuted in season one of Visions. That episode’s story will continue in a spinoff titled “Star Wars Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi.” As of now, there is no release date for this spinoff.

On the live action front, production of season two of Ahsoka began about a week after Celebration. Star Rosario Dawson along with Filoni and Favreau teased some elements that will be present in season two: some more Chopper (to Filoni’s slight chagrin), a war between the New Republic and remnants of the Empire (with the Republic led by Admiral Ackbar and the Imperial Remnants led by Grand Admiral Thrawn) and perhaps most welcome: the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker. Christensen reprised his role in season one, providing some training for Ahsoka; he will likely play a similar role in season two.

Immediate Future

Andor season two is currently on-going. The series is releasing episodes three at a time on Tuesday evenings through May 13. Half of the episodes have dropped so far and continue the rich story that began in season one.

Star Wars Day (May the 4th) will see the debut of Tales of the Underworld. The third Tales anthology, it will follow Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane in the years immediately after the Clone Wars.

The Force remains strong.
