Sidney Prescott is officially back for Scream 5.
Previously it had been reported that David Arquette and Courteney Cox would reprise their roles as Dewey Rile and Gale Weathers.
In September, Deadline reported that Neve Campbell will reprise her role as the series’ heroine, Sidney Prescott, who had personally fought all the folks who have put on the Ghostface mask and targeted her for murder.
Scream 5 is written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, and directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Radio Silence Productions will serve as a production company for the film.
Campbell said she spent some time with Radio Silence to see how they would handle the characters and plot, as this will be the first film without series director Wes Craven (who died in 2015) in the director’s chair.
“After spending time speaking with Radio Silence, they have shown such love, respect and admiration for Wes Craven and all that he’s created in the ‘Scream’ franchise. I am beyond excited to step back into the role of Sidney Prescott and return to Woodsboro,” Campbell said in a statement to Deadline.
Sidney Prescott first came to the big screen in the original film in 1996. The anniversary of her mother’s death is approaching when a murder spree breaks out in her hometown of Woodsboro, California. The second film saw a second murder spree at Sid’s college, and the third film saw murders on the set of the film within a film, Stab 3. Scream 4, the most recent film and Craven’s final directing role, saw Sidney return to her hometown in time for the 15th anniversary of the Woodsboro murders of the first film when another murder spree breaks out.
Though plot details are largely unknown this early in production, the Wikipedia page for the film states: “The film follows the story of a young woman who returns to her old hometown, only to encounter horrific murder cases connected to an infamous masked serial killer.” This plot outline sounds reminiscent of Scream 4 and could just be speculation at this point.
As the films have poked fun at various horror movie tropes (the rules of a horror movie, the rules of a sequel, the rules of a trilogy and the rules of a horror remake), the fifth film will likely do the same. The film could poke fun at characters reprising their roles after such a long time, which is true for these characters, and is true of Jamie Lee Curtis returning for 2018’s Halloween. Only time will tell.
Other casting announcements for the film include Marley Shelton returning as Deputy Judy Hicks from Scream 4 and Roger L. Jackson returning as the voice of Ghostface. In addition, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Dylan Minnette, Mason Gooding, Kyle Gallner, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mikey Madison and Sonia Ben Ammar have all been cast in undisclosed roles.
Scream 5 is due out January 14, 2022.
