‘Scream’ trailer features return of Sidney, Gale, Dewey and a darker Ghostface

“Hello, Sidney. It’s an honor.”

That’s just one of the lines present in the new trailer for the upcoming Scream film.

The trailer debuted Tuesday morning, following a weekend showing of the original Scream in theatres in celebration of the original film’s 25th anniversary.

While the trailer doesn’t give away too much, it does hint at quite a bit.

It seemingly recreates the opening of the original Scream, with Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) answering the phone while home alone. Naturally, she is threatened by Ghostface (voiced by Roger L. Jackson) and then attacked by the killer.

Next, we see the franchise’s lead character, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) receiving a call from Dewey Riley (David Arquette), telling her the killings have started again. Dewey asks Sid if she has a gun and Sid replied, “I’m Sidney Prescott. Of course I have a gun.”

We then see flashes of scenes from various scenes in the film. We see Ghostface patrolling what looks like the Woodsboro hospital, Dewey searching for and briefly fighting Ghostface, Sid and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) looking like they’re about to enter a home to fight Ghostface and Sid asks “Are you ready?” and Gale responds, “For this? Never.” There’s also a brief flash of Deputy Judy Hicks (Marley Shelton), returning from Scream 4.

Also present are many of the new characters, including Wes Hicks (Dylan Minnette), Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid), Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown), Liv McKenzie (Sonia Ammar), Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison) and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding).

Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), a new character to the franchise, as seen during a scene in Scream (2022). The house appears to be the house of Stu Macher from the 1996 original film.

The film’s Ghostface appears to be a dark interpretation of the character. The character doesn’t joke with any of the characters he interacts with in the trailer, seeming to be more business-like in terms of causing horror in Woodsboro.

As the trailer does not give away much in terms of plot, there are many unanswered questions. For instance: Are Dewey and Gale together as a couple, or are they divorced? In real life David and Courteney separated during production of Scream 4 and later divorced. Dewey and Gale’s relationship have always mirrored David and Courteney’s real-life relationship.

Scream is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Original Scream writer Kevin Williamson serves as executive producer on this film.

Scream will hit theatres on January 14, 2022.
