Neo and Trinity reunite in trailer for ‘The Matrix Resurrections’

Neo and Trinity are back in the new trailer for the upcoming fourth Matrix film, The Matrix Resurrections.

The trailer debuted Thursday, one day following the relaunch of the website whatisthematrix.com. The website allows users to choose the red pill or the blue pill before playing a short clip from the movie that varies based on the time the user clicked on one of the pills.

As the title implies, Neo and Trinity seem to be resurrected within the Matrix, the computer alternate reality that is the setting of the trilogy of Matrix films released in 1999 and 2003. Neo (Keanu Reeves) has seemingly taken on his former persona of Thomas Anderson, as seen in a scene where he talks with (presumably) a therapist played by Neil Patrick Harris.

In another scene, set at what looks like a coffee shop, Neo shakes hands with Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), who asks if they have met before. The scene implies déjà vu, which in the first Matrix film was revealed as a glitch in the Matrix, when something changes.

There are several Easter Eggs from the previous films present in the trailer. There is a Morpheus-like character (it could be a younger version of the character) offering Neo a red pill during one scene. There is a shot of a rabbit tattoo on another character, a reference to the first film as Neo “wakes up” to the truth of the Matrix.

In addition, there is a recreation of the infamous fight training scene from the first film present, with Neo demonstrating some of his powers that he had in previous films. Neo is also shown seemingly stopping bullets in midair during another scene, with Trinity at his side.

Agent Johnson (Daniel Bernhardt) is also shown in the trailer, using the same Agent ability to take over the form of someone plugged into the Matrix. Johnson was introduced in The Matrix Reloaded as the leader of the trio of Upgraded Agents in that film (he is the agent who declares Neo is ‘Only human’ before he starts to attack Neo).

Although not seen in the trailer, it is confirmed that Lambert Wilson will return as The Merovingian and Jada Pinkett Smith will reprise her role as Niobe, the lover of Morpheus. And while Laurence Fishburne has said he was not asked to return for this film, that could be a ruse. Perhaps Morpheus will show up at the last moment ala Luke Skywalker in The Force Awakens. Only time will tell.

The Matrix Resurrections is scheduled for release on Dec. 22. It will have a theatrical release as well as stream digitally on the ad-free tier of HBO Max in the U.S. for a month beginning that same day. Lana Wachowski directed the film and wrote it with David Mitchell and Aleksandra Hermon.
