Lucasfilm announces multiple projects coming soon for Disney+

Get ready for a lot more Star Wars.

Disney had its Investor Day event Thursday, where Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced new series being produced by Lucasfilm that will expand not only the Star Wars universe, but others as well.

Several new series will air on Disney+ in the coming years that will continue the story of Star Wars. These will be set in various eras of the timeline and explore new characters and stories.

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy introduces the new series being produces by Lucasfilm, including several Star Wars projects and a fifth Indiana Jones film.

Here’s a look at what Lucasfilm is working on for Disney+ in the coming years.

Rogue Squadron

The next film in the Star Wars saga is Rogue Squadron. Wonder Woman Director Patty Jenkins will helm this film, becoming the first woman to direct a Star Wars movie.

According to starwars.com, the film will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots (part of the Rogue Squadron, formed in honor of the crew of Rogue One) as the pilots earn their wings and risk their lives.

“Patty has established herself as one of the top directors working in the film industry today,” Kennedy said. “She’s a visionary who knows how to strike the balance between action and heart, and I can’t wait to see what she does in the Star Wars galaxy.”

Rogue Squadron will arrive in theatres Christmas 2023.

Untitled Taika Waititi film

Taika Waititi will direct an as-yet unnamed Star Wars film.

Starwars.com previously reported the film on its blog and that Waititi will write the film with Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

Waititi previously directed Chapter 8 of The Mandalorian and provided the voice for IG-11, the droid that helps The Mandalorian rescue Grogu.

“Taika’s approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected and unique,” Kennedy said. “His enormous talent and sense of humor will ensure that audiences are in for an unforgettable ride.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

At the 2019 D3 Expo, Lucasfilm announced that Ewan McGregor will return to the saga to portray Obi-Wan Kenobi in the years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.

The series, named for McGregor’s character, will take place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith (eight years before the original film). Obi-Wan Kenobi is directed by Deborah Chow, who has directed a few episodes of The Mandalorian.

Some welcome news for this series: Hayden Christensen will return to play Darth Vader in the series. Kennedy has described the reunion between Obi-Wan and Vader as “the rematch of the century.”

“It was such an incredible journey playing Anakin Skywalker,” Christensen said. “Of course Anakin and Obi-Wan weren’t on the greatest of terms when we last saw them…I’m excited to work with Ewan again. It feels good to be back.”

Ahsoka

Anakin’s apprentice Ahsoka Tano had her debut in animation, appearing as a main character in The Clone Wars and later in Star Wars Rebels.

Ahsoka made her live-action debut in episode 13 of The Mandalorian, portrayed by Rosario Dawson.

Dawson will return to play Ahsoka in a limited series written by Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni. Filoni will also serve as executive producer for the series, alongside Jon Favreau.

Rangers of the New Republic

This new series is set within the timeline of The Mandalorian.

Little information is known, but it is said the series will intersect with future stories and culminate into a climactic story event. As this story takes place between Return of the Jedi and the sequel trilogy, perhaps it will contain appearances by the golden trio of Luke, Leia and Han.

Favreau and Filoni will serve as executive producers on the project.

Lando

The smooth-talking original owner of the Millennium Falcon and the baron administrator of Cloud City will get his own series as well.

Lando is being developed by Justin Simien, creator of the acclaimed Dear White People.

No word yet from Lucasfilm, but it’s likely Donald Glover will return to play Lando, reprising his role from Solo.

Andor

Cassian Andor was introduced (and killed off) in Rogue One as a longtime Rebel pilot who joins Jyn Erso on the mission to obtain the Death Star plans, setting up the events of the original film.

Diego Luna will reprise his role as Cassian in Andor, set to debut on Disney+ in 2022. The series will take place a few years before Rogue One.

Luna will be joined by Stellan Skarsgard, Adria Arojan, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller and Genevieve O’Reilly, returning as Mon Mothma.

Production of Andor kicked off three weeks ago in London, according to starwars.com.

The Acolyte

Emmy-winning Leslye Headland will bring a new series to Disney+ called The Acolyte.

Starwars.com describes the series as “a mystery thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.”

The High Republic era will kick off in book form in January, with the release of Light of the Jedi and A Test of Courage.

The Bad Batch

The Bad Batch, an elite and experimental unit of Clone Troopers, was introduced in the final season of The Clone Wars.

This sequel series will follow The Bad Batch as they find their way in a rapidly changing universe following the end of the Clone Wars and the rise of the Empire.

In the new era of the Empire, The Bad Batch will take on daring mercenary missions as they try to stay afloat and find new purpose.

Star Wars: Visions

Star Wars: Visions is an original series of animated short films that will celebrate Star Wars through the lens of the world’s best anime creators.

The anthology collection will bring together the visions of 10 people from several of the leading Japanese animation studios.

The series will come to Disney+ in 2021.

A Droid Story

Lucasfilm animation will take up with Industrial Light & Magic to develop A Droid Story.

This story will introduce us to a new hero, who will be guided by the legendary Star Wars duo (and the only two characters to appear in every Skywalker Saga film) R2-D2 and C-3PO.

At this time, it is unknown of longtime C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels will return to voice his iconic character. Fingers crossed!

Indiana Jones 5

Dr. Jones is returning to the big screen.

James Mangold, director of Ford v Ferrari will help the series, taking over from Indy director Steven Spielberg, who will instead produce this film.

Harrison Ford will once again return to play his iconic character, returning to a role he first played in 1981.

The fifth Indiana Jones film is set to begin shooting in the spring and will arrive in theatres in July 2022.

Willow

Ron Howard’s 1988 film is getting its own series on Disney+.

Warwick Davis will return to play the role of the great sorcerer, Willow Ufgood. Jon Chu, director of Crazy Rich Asians, will direct the pilot episode of the series.

Willow is set to begin filming in March in Wales and will debut on Disney+ in 2022.

Children of Blood & Bone

Tomi Adeyemi’s New York Times bestselling novel Children of Blood and Bone will get an adaptation for Disney+.

The story will center on a young African girl’s quest to restore magic to her forsaken people, known as the Maji.

Lucasfilm will partner with 20th Century Studios to produce this adventure.
