Production of the first live-action Star Wars television series is officially underway.
Starwars.com announced The Mandalorian on Thursday. Few details have been released other than the main players involved in the series, and when the series takes place.
Emmy-nominated producer and actor Jon Favreau, known for his work on Rudy, Swingers, The Break-Up, Elf, Three Iron Man films and more, will serve as a writer and executive producer for The Mandalorian. Veteran Star Wars director band producer Dave Filoni (The Clone Wars and Rebels will direct the first episode. In additional, Colin Wilson and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy will serve as executive producers.
Other episodic directors announced include Deborah Chow, Rick Famuyiwa, Bryce Dallas Howard and Taika Waititi.
As far as cast, no announcements were made on the Starwars.com article. However, the article did confirm The Mandalorian will take place after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order (in other words, in between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens).
The sole plot detail – other than setting – is as follows: the series will “follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.”
Mandalorians, of course, have a long history in Star Wars. Infamous bounty hunter Boba Fett and his father Jango Fett both wore Mandalorian armor, leading to their iconic appearances in the films. The armor donned by the Clone Army was modeled after Jango’s armor. The yet-unnamed lead character of The Mandalorian clearly wears Mandalorian armor, which appears reminiscent to that of the Fetts.
In Star Wars Legends, Mandalorians played a large role in the original Expanded Universe, particularly with the two popular games Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords.
In the first KOTOR game, it was established that the Republic went to war against the Mandalorians, with the Jedi Revan and Malak entering the war and leading the Republic’s army against the wishes of the Jedi Council. In both games, Mandalorian veteran Canderous Ordo joins the player’s party of characters to assist them in their mission. By KOTOR II, Canderous has become Mandalore the Preserver, leader of the Mandalorians.
The Mandalorian will air on Disney’s streaming service, which is set to start in 2019. More details will come from Starwars.com
Meanwhile, Star Wars Resistance, an animated series that takes place shortly before The Force Awakens is set to premiere Sunday on Disney Channel. Resistance will at 10 p.m./9 Central.
