Filming wraps on still-untitled Episode IX

We’re just about 10 months away from Star Wars: Episode IX hitting theatres and we still don’t have an official title for it!

Alas, the title will hopefully be revealed soon. Friday afternoon, director JJ Abrams (returning after writing and directing The Force Awakens) tweeted a picture of the sequel trilogy’s golden trio – Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac – giving each other a hug on the final day of shooting for IX. Shooting has taken about six months; principal photography began in August, with Abrams sharing a photo on social media from the set.

Now that principal photography has wrapped, the countdown is on to Episode IX. I’m not sure what we should use as a hashtag on Twitter, as we used #WaitForVIII for The Last Jedi in 2017. Perhaps something like #PineForIX.

As its predecessors, few plot details are known. Empire has reported that the film will take place about a year after The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Many of the principal cast from the other two films, including the late Carrie Fisher, who will appear via unused footage from the previous two films. Also returning for the first time since Return of the Jedi is Billy Dee Williams, reprising his role as Lando Calrissian.

Meanwhile, some rumors are floating around on the Internet saying that theatres have footage for a teaser trailer and are prepared to show it in the coming days. I’m gonna shut down those rumors and explain how there is precedence for the teaser to be released at a certain time.

In 2015 and 2017, Star Wars Celebration was held. Celebration 2015 and 2017 included panels with the cast of the new films that each concluded with a reveal of the teaser trailers (though in the case of Force Awakens, it was actually the second teaser, as an 88-second teaser has been released in Nov. 2014) with the cast present.

Star Wars Celebration 2019 is taking place in Chicago this year. While there hasn’t been an official announcement of a panel featuring the cast of IX, you can bet that it probably will happen based on the last two celebrations. And based on that, you can safely bet that is when the teaser will get its first release.

Episode IX hits theatres on Dec. 20.

Until then, May the Force be with you.
