Dewey and Gale confirmed for ‘Scream 5’

If you haven’t heard yet, Scream 5 is officially happening!

The series dates all the way back to 1996, when the first film came out (around Christmastime, ironically for a horror movie). Scream became a horror film staple by poking fun at all of the classic horror movie troupes and establishing a set of rules the characters must abide by in order to successfully survive a horror movie.

Two of the main characters — Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) — shared a love story that also happened in real life. On the first film, the two were getting to know each other. By the sequel, in Cox’s words they were “sleeping together” and by Scream 3 they were married. At the end of Scream 3, Dewey proposed to Gale, so it really was both a fictional and real romance.

At the time of Scream 4, Arquette and Cox were separated, but remained civil on set. In the film, there is tension between Dewey and Gale, but they clearly still care about one another.

In 2012, Arquette and Cox filed for divorced and it was finalized the following year.

Today, Cox announced on her Instagram that she will return for the fifth film in the franchise, tentatively due out in 2021, the 25th anniversary of the first film.

In May, Deadline reported Arquette will reprise his role as Dewey in the upcoming fifth film.

The question that remains is: how will Dewey and Gale’s relationship be reflected on screen? Though they seemingly reconciled in Scream 4, that doesn’t mean any toxicity that was in their marriage just went away. It’s possible that like their real-life counterparts, Dewey and Gale may no longer be together. Only time will tell.

Meanwhile, there is yet to be confirmation about the return of Neve Campbell as series protagonist Sidney Prescott. Though, Campbell has been approached for the film and is open to appearing in it.

Campbell told The Hollywood Reporter she had been hesitant to do a fifth film if it would ever happen, in part because of the death of series director Wes Craven in 2015.

“I definitely had a period where I was thinking it would just be too odd to do a movie without Wes, and I wasn’t certain that I would want to do that,” Campbell said. “But, I think enough time has passed. I got this really, really respectful letter from the directors [Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett] of the new one. They wrote a letter honoring Wes in such a beautiful way, and they expressed that the reason they make horror movies is because of Wes and the Scream films. They also expressed how blown away they are at the idea of actually getting an opportunity to make one of them and how much they want to honor and respect Wes’ vision. … So, we’ll see.”

Hopefully, Campbell is swayed to do the fifth film and we’ll once again see Sidney, Dewey and Gale fighting Ghostface.
